DAY 44 - Vancouver Island +

We headed out towards the north end of the Island on Route 19A (8:30am)- another scenic route but this one wasn't too bad. Speed was about 80kms/hr. We went as far as Courtenay and then headed back on the main Island Highway - split, two lanes each side. There are a number of intersections with lights but there is a flasher set back a bit to let you know you will have to stop for a red (flasher goes before the yellow). Good idea.
We had been told to go to Tofino and did start but it was another narrow winding road, and very busy so we decided against it. Too much like Route 99! We did see two cars -sports and a SUV with the driver on the right side.
We then got back on Route 19/1 and headed towards Victoria. We planned to stay at the KOA but missed the sign (was there one?) for it and were by it before we knew. Hard to get back because of split road and divider all the way. We continued on looking for a place to stay but ended up in downtown Victoria and still no place to rest. We saw the Empress but didn't try there. We went around the city and ended up heading for the boat, still planning to stay on the Island but it didn't happen. We were on the 4:00 pm boat which left after 5:00pm for Tsawwassen (Vancouver). As we got off the boat we heard on the radio there would be no more boats today - learned Sunday they had had a boom scare. We just missed the "fun" as they had to onload the boats that were ready to go and search the boats. I guess a boat did go later in the evening but thousands of people were impacted.
Anyway we started towards Vancouver still looking for a place - got lost, went through my first tunnel, drove through Vancouver on Granville and finally saw a sign for 1A East and followed it through Surrey where we finally found a motel after 10:00pm again! Oh the fun of travel!
