Day 79 - Charlottetown

Yes, Charlottetown. We decided to head home today. Of course, she had to stop at Costco in Moncton before we headed to the Island. I didn't have much room in the back by the time she finished shopping but it wasn't too far a drive after that so not too bad.
I am now settled on my own bed and will be staying here for a while. But check us out next year, we hope to head out again! See you then,
Jazz

Day 78 - Sussex

We left the Island and headed back in the States towards Calais. Saw this lighthouse at a rest stop just before Calais. There was a line up to cross but not too bad. We then followed the coastal route, went into St. Andrew's and then followed route 111 to Sussex. There were black clouds (overcast day all day) so we stopped at the All Seasons Motel.

DAY 77 - Campobello Island

The morning was foggy - Fundy Bay area of course - so we just read and snoozed. It cleared in the afternoon so we went out looking again but no whales, more birds though.
Also, we had this little guest looking for a handout.

Day 76 - Campobello Island

We left Bar Harbor and headed out for route 1 east. Saw a sign for the Island and decided to head there. It is part of New Brunswick but the US managers the Rosevelt Cottage property. Nice cottage!
We stayed at the Provincial Park and toured around to see if we could get to see any whales. At one point she saw one near the saiboat but it doesn't show on the picture. There was a seal closer to shore. The head is just above the water. Lots of birds.

Day 75 - Bar Harbor

We got moving slowly today and then headed out to tour around Mount Desert Island and go to BAr Harbor proper. Lots of people there. We alternated between woods and coasts as we rounded the mountain. Some very nice homes (or are they summer homes?) and lots of sail boats in the harbors.

Day 74 - Bar Harbor, Maine

We headed out on route 1 again. Stopped in Freeport so she could go in a couple of outlets.
There are longer sections now between communities and we are seeing lots of trees and even some mountains. Still on the water at times. She took this shot on a bridge when traffic was moving very slowly, as it did at times. We headed to the KOA in Bar Harbor just off 1 at the intersection of routes 3 and 102.
Shortly after we settled in we saw a St. Bernard. At last, someone who might outweigh me. We again have a nice shady spot and can see water. She even got this shot of the sunset.

DAY 73 - Saco

She did a wash this morning and then we headed out to the harness reacetrack. Unfortunately, we couldn't get close enough to the track for me to see the horses. So, we went over to the mall and she went in for a bit. Today is a bit cooler and we don't have the humidity.
We wentback to the site and she organized the car while I had a siesta.
Early to bed as it is dark by 8:00pm and we travel tomorrow.

DAY 72 - SACO

We headed back to Kittery today however, it was really hot anf humid even in the morning. Temperature was somewhere between 89 and 93 as per two different signs. She did a little shopping but we then headed back towards Saco. We continued on and went to see the Maine Mall - at least know where it is and will see if tomorrow is any cooler. Headed back to out site; it is pretty nice under the trees.
This little guy thinks so too!

DAy 71 - Saco, Maine

Continued along route 1 to Saco. we didn't travel that far but because it is a slow route and lots of traffic it still took us a while. This is a resort area - lots of villages abdsmall towns. We went through Kittery, just inside Maine border - there are lots of outlet stores here but we didn't stop today. Will see about them later.
We had to wait for a drawbridge today but couldn't see the boat going through.
Saco has a couple of water slide parks but of course I can't go; we can just look at the crowds having fun. We are at the KOA, a nice spot.

Day 70 - Hampton Falls, NH

Continued on Route 1 today but it became a major route as we neared Providence. Of course it went right into the city and we lost it at some point. Did find the 95 so got on it to pass the city and then connected to the 1 again. Of course that brought us to Boston and again we got into the city then lost the route. Signage is not that great and of course we don't have a navigator to help with directions - and a poor map. We found route 9 going west and a quick look at the map showed it with connected with the 95 so we went west and back to the 95. We stayed on it until well past Boston. In our drive through the city we did end up near a major medical centre and in Providence we were around the legislature buildings.
Tried a couple of motels but no pets at one and a $100 deposit plus $50 fee for a pet at the other. We kept going and finally stopped at the Wakeda Campground in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. Yes, still feels like we are going in circles. We have been in Vermont and New hampshire twice and Massachusetts three times.
This campground has about 400 sites, very nice spot just off route 1 on 88 west.
I had a new experience today as we twice crossed bridges that lift to allow boats to go through but we didn't see that happen today.

DAY 69 - Saybrook

Well we thought it was a good idea but once we got into Massachusetts the 91 got very busy and opene to three lanes each side and 5 lanes when near/in the cities. Of course there are exit and entry ramps on both sides and cars crossing lanes to get to their exits. Such fun! We held in through Sprinfield, Mass. and Hartford, Connecticut but bailed out when we reached a rest stop and Information Centre in Wallingford. Very nice spot.
We were told the 95 would be as busy if not worse so we opted for another route. A look at the map found Route 1 along the coast right up and into Maine. Looked good so we moved to it. It is the scenic route, slow and winding, and more our speed.
Lots of villages along the way. We tried to stay at a state park but they wouldn't allow dogs so we stopped at the Day's Inn in Old Saybrook, Conn for the night. There aren't any private campgrounds in this part of the state. We didn't get any pictures today but I do have my own bed.

Day 68 - Battleboro

We are doing a bit of backtracking today. Took route 93 south and then route 69 west/north to go back into Vermont. We wanted to get to interstate 91. This way we will go back into Vermont and Massachusetts, but in different areas but will add Connecticut and Rhode Island to our route. This way we will cover all of New England. Did see mountains most of the way today. Speed was a bit faster but traffic not too heavy. We stopped at the Econo Lodge in Battleboro - southern Vermont. Only one bed so we have to share tonight.

Day 67 - White Mountains

The weather is a bit better today - low 70's as compared to the 60's yesterday. It is sunny with some cloud cover.
She did a wash this morning and sawa brochure for a round trip in the mountains so we did that. The circuit is about 100 miles - goes by several attractions including Mt. Washington. We went routes 3, 112, 16 and 302 which brought us back to our start point on 3.
At one stop she saw another Great Dane (I was in the car in the parking lot). This one waas mostly black and definitely smaller than me. She was adopted too though.
The route is narrow, winding up and down so fairly slow. But then you are expected to stop and see the sights or hike a bit. We did stop to take a few pictures but not at any of the attractions as it was warm for me in the car.
Evening is cool and dark by 8:00pm so she is in the car with me reading by flashlight.
Hopefully it will warm up a bit when we leave the mountains, as least in the evenings - not fun camping in the cold.

Day 66 - Twin Mountains

We continued to travel north on route 7 in the Green Mountains until we reached Burlington. We then headed east
on route 2. We followed this route until we got to Lancaster where we connect to route 3 in order to head to the Twin Mountains KOA.
We saw a Great Dane today - a mix color and maybe a bit samller than me.
It was a cool day and very cool this evening so I have company in the car.
The first image is the Green Mountains of Vermont and the second is the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

DAY 65 - Rutland, Vermont

We headed out on Route 20 across Newyork and Massachusettsuntil we got to Pittsfield and then we headed north on Route 7 into Vermont. We got into the Green Mountains area. We passed a race cae track - lots of vehicles there but didn't see ant racing. We also passed a horse jumping show.
Stopped at Rutland for the night.

Saturday, August 18, 2007

DAY 64 - Cooperstown

We started out on Route 20 again heading for Cooperstown. We passed through Madison where they had 1000 dealers in antiques. There are a lot of places selling antigues along the way.
We made it to Cooperstown fairly early so we (she) set up and we headed to Cooperstown. I got to sit in the parking lot. This sign was near it. She went in to the Baseball hall of Fame. On the way back to our campground she noticed the opera house and decided to go. She'd never been to one before.
We had supper at the campground and then headed out again. Of course, I'm in the parking lot. And, it started to rain about 8:00 pm but it didn't last too long.
However, the screens were open in the tent so things are wet. We both slept in the car.
I should mention that everything is very green along the way - no more crunchy grass!

DAY 63 - Canadaigua

She had wanted to go to Marine World but it was a very hot day already in the morning so we crossed over to New York. We took route 62 and then route 5 and finally connected to route 20. We are going very slowly as over an hour was in the Niagara urban area where the speed limit was 40 m/hr most of the way. Even when we got on the highway there are many small towns and villages so we need to slow down. Top speed is about 50 m/hr. We are in farming country and passed lots of corn fields. Many places are advertising fresh picked sweet corn for sale.
We stopped at the KOA in Canadaigua early in the afternoon as it is a hot day. Just relaxed the afternoon and early evening away. Some folks are fishing in the on site pond but it is a catch and release spot .

Day 62 - Niagara Falls

She did a wash this morning and then we went down to the falls. Well, I stayed in the parking lot and she went to take pictures. Afterwards we drove by so I saw the falls and lots and lots of people. We turned the wrong way on our way back and ended up in Niagara-on-the-lake. Saw lots of fields of grape plants as this is wine country. We had to get on the QEW to get back but did make it in one piece.
We then went to a shopping area - factory outlet stores. She did some Christmas shopping but there was nothing for me. I only got a few fries left over from her lunch.
We went back to the campground so I could have a siesta during the mid afternoon and she could read for a while.

DAY 61 - Niagara Falls

After we got packed up we decided to try the Dog beach again at Rondeau. No dogs today so I went down to the water's edge. There were waves coming in so I didn't go in but I was at the edge of Lake Erie.
We then continued on route 3 across the lower part of the province - still farm country - lots of corn and saw one big sunflower field.
We switched to route 98 so we would come out near our KOA but the road was closed as we neared Niagara Falls but we followed the detour and were able to get back on track and found our KOA. This is a very large campground with about 300 sites including the Kabins. We are near the dog walk at site 225 - off on out own a bit but a lot of bikes and walkerscome by so I can tell them off. One family came over to meet me. The daughter has two Great Danes at home - one looks a lot like me.

Tuesday, August 14, 2007

DAY 60 - Rondeau

We started the day slowly but I am doing much better. She stopped for breakfast and then we headed across the bridge (another tool) for Sarnia. We couldn't figure out an easy route for staying in the states. We connected to Route 40 and crossed lower Ontario on it. Mostly farm country - lots of corn!
We stopped at the Rondeau Provincial Park. Very nice spot. They even have a dog beach but when we went there was a dog runnibg loose so I didn't get to go on the beach. We are on Lake Erie now.

DAY 59 - Lakeport

I had a good night so got water and a bit of food this morning and didn't get sick again. There are several dogs here and I have told a few off so she thinks I must be feeling better and getting back to myself.
We went to find a laundry and after she did the clothes we went looking for a place for her to eat. She found a place where you pay going in and then eat what you want - buffet style. She says it was really good. I didn't get a treat, she says becaue I was sick.
We then went WalMart to get water, etc. and then headed back to the campground. Since it was raining we sat in the car - she read and I snoozed. It cleared off in the early afternoon.
It is very quite here now as most people have left - weekend campers I guess. It was full last night. It is a nice spot with a beach but since I can't go there I'm not sure what it is like.

DAY 58 - Lakeport

Today we start week 9 of our trip. We are still in Michigan travelling along route 25. I tried to drink some water but was sick again. We can't travel very fast because this weekend is a big "Yard sale" up and down the coast. She is watching for an animal hospital. We found one in Lakeport. Dr.Meadows and his staff were very good to me. He checked me over and they did some blood work - suggests I probably have gastroenteritis and he gave me a couple of prescriptions to help and some bland food to eat for a few days. I was weighed as well - 113.4 lbs. so have lost some weight. She says that is because I'm only getting one set of treats a days these days - not my usual three or four.
Anyway, we stopped in Lakeport at the State Campground and spent a quite afternoon and evening. She set up the tent so I have the car to myself tonight. I'm doing better and have not been sick again but have to wait for a while to have water and 24 hours till i can eat again.

Day 57 - Lighthouse

We crossed a tool bridge today and linked up with Route 23 along the shores of Lake Huron. We stopped at a roadside rest stop so I could go to the water's edge and put a paw in the lake. We saw these guys there. It is resort area along here so driving is slow but a nice drive. We are in the trees but can spot the lake quite a lot.
After Bay City we connected to Route 25. This area is mostly farm country and there are few places to stay. We stopped at a road side for supper and later I got sick. We were finally able to get a spot at the Lighthouse Campground. Shs stayed in the car with me just in case I got sick again.

Day 56 -

We continued on route 2 today and it was woods again. In fact we went through two national forests, one being the Ottawa National Forest. We left Lake Superior but later in the day were driving along Lake Michigan - by times right along the shore. Some people were swimming but I only got two paws wet this time. Can you tell the difference between the lakes? We were in Wisconsin again for a bit but mostly we drove across northern Michigan. The speed limit here is 55 - it lowers with each state going east. The road is about the same though. They are really wanting people to know when they can and can't pass here. Every time there is a solid line there are two signs, one on each side of the road - DO nOT Pass on one and NO PASSING ZONE on the other. We didn't see anybody pass on the solid line so maybe the signs are working - speed limit isn't though.
We are staying at the St. Ignace KOA tonight - in a Kabin and I have my own bed again. I tried to get the double bed but she took it and I have to take the lower bunk.
Oh, and we passed the 20,ooo kms. mark today and still going or should I say coming as we are heading east!
Also, thought you might like to check out a site we heard about - www.prattmuseum.org
They have a bearcam and one on birds (in Alaska). We haven't seen it yet but hear it is great to see. Take a look.

DAY 55 - Ironwood

Got up early and packed up so we could be at the Toyota's dealer for 8:00 am. They had the car done in no time and we headed out on Route 2 again by 9:00 am. When we reached the Chippewa National Forest the terrain changed to woods from prairie farm land. Also, the split highway was reduced to two lanes and the speed limit went down to 60 mi/hr. Of Course, we are the only ones driving at this speed. And, we are getting hills again.
We drove into Wisconsin in the late morning. Since this route is only about 100 miles across the state we drove right through. We did stop at Ashland right on Lake Superior and I got a paw wet.
We drove into Michigan by mid afternoon but stopped at Ironwood at Davy's Motel. The lady at the Information Centre said the next bigger community is another 145 miles away and there wouldn't be many places to stop in between. We didn't want another late night.
We only have one bed so I guess I'll have to share.

DAY 54 - Bemidji

She updated the website today so we are back on track. Then we took a drive into town and stopped to see Paul and Baby Blue. See I'm not so big after all!
OK, I'm not really in jail. This is the area for dogs to do their business at the kampground .
We made an appointment to get the car serviced at the Toyota dealer - 8:00am tomorrow morning so we headed back to the campground and had an early night. She spent some time taking pictures of the birds. There were a couple of rabbits around too. I wanted to chase them but she wouldn't let me.

DAY 53 - Bemidji

We headed out on Route 2 again - this road goes across several states. We saw lots of corn fields and big big fields of sunflowers. Tell the birds at our house there should be lots of food for them this winter.
We stopped early again today - at the KOA Kampground in Bemidji, Minnesota. This is where Paul Bunyan was born!
She did a wash and then finally got access to the internet to update my site. We went to town for a bit in the evening and she had supper at Perkin's (family retaurant). I got a share and it was very good. She then went to a mall so I watched the people going in and out. Then back to the campground and to bed.

Tuesday, August 7, 2007

DAY 52 - Turtle River State Park

We headed out on Route 2 across North Dakota - lots of corn fields. The land is fairly flat here. We stopped early today because she is still tired. We stayed at the Turtle River State Park. There were two dogs at the site across from us but I didn't get to meet then. We had a quite day, we both snoozed for a bit in the afternoon.
Didn't see any wildlife but she got pictures of a few birds.

DAY 51 - Minot

We headed out on ROute 21 (south) and then switched to go east on Route 13. We stopped in Eastend and she went to the T-Rex Centre. They discovered the bones of a t-rex there a few years back and they are on display in the Centre. We then continued on Route 13 for a bit but took Route 4 to head across the border into Montana. From the border to Malta, on Route 191 (about 50 miles) we only saw six vehicles. Saw lots of cattle and wheat fields though. We planned to stay at a campground in Glasgow but it was very open - no trees and it was very hot so we didn't stop there. She started looking for another campground but wasn't successful so switched to motels. However, it was a Saturday and lots of weddings happening. We ended up driving all the way to Minot in North Dakota and finally got a room at the Vagas Motor Inn at what we thought was 1:00am but was 2:00 am because we had come into another time zone. I had to stay in the car for the night as all the pet rooms were already let. Did get to see the sun set.
The land in Montana is like a giant mocules - lots of intersecting hills but not too high. Not sure about ND - didn't see much in the dark.

DAYS 49/50 - Cypree Hills

We started out on Route 2 but decided to go back to route 21 - fewer cars, etc. we finally connected with Highway 1 and stayed on it until we were in Saskatchewan. We then took Highway 21 South and stopped at Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. We spent the evening doing laundry. But we did see this deer when she went to the washroom. Saw some wild turkeys too. We stayed the next day - rest day again!
