DAY 42 - Route 99!

We started out at about 8:30 am towards Vancouver. We planned to stop someplace in between. We found a couple of really nice rest areas - WoodpeckerRest Area being one - with real toilets and sinks with water, a luxury we haven't seen for a while.
BUT. We left highway 97 near Clinton and went on to Highway 99 - the scenic route!
Well, much better to say the white knuckle route. Went about 60kms/hr most of the way. Even I paid attention. She said some curves were so sharp (on edge of a mountain remember) that she thought we might run into the back of our car! It was very beautiful if you had the time to take a look but for the most part she had to keep eyes on the road. This was the first time we saw klms marked as well as grades for the hills - one was a 11% for 2 kms and then a 13% grade for 5 kms. What fun!
One advantage of going slow is we were able to sneak up on this guy.
She decided that we were only doing this once so kept going all the way through. It got a little better in Pemberton but did not last long. There is MAJOR construction going on between Whistler and Vancouver (for the 2010 Olympics). Whistler is beautiful - too bad we were not able to spend more time but it was getting late in the day. We kept going till we saw a sign for the ferry and decided to take it. We arrived in Nanaimo at about 11:00pm. Another long day!. We found a motel that would take me and called it a night.
